*I received this book as part of the Reign the Earth street team. This in no way affected my opinions.
I’ll admit, going into this book I wasn’t sure that I was going to like it. I’d briefly seen that it had a few mixed reviews on Goodreads, and was a little tentative after that. I’ll discuss those reviews a little later on, but for now, I just have to say that Reign the Earth was incredible.
From the moment I picked it up, I was completely sucked in by the world and characters. I have to admit that I never loved with the main character, Shalia—I don’t know what it was. I guess she felt like a lot of other YA heroines, and I’d been expecting a little more from her. However, I loved the supporting characters so much that it didn’t really bother me. I have to say, I think my favourite was Kairos—he was just such a wonderful character and brother, and I would protect him with my life. But honestly, all of the characters were an absolute joy to read about, even the not so good ones.
The plot is very basic. We’ve all heard the marrying of two kingdoms story before, as well as the whole elemental thing. But there was still something so unique and intriguing about the whole thing. I don’t really know what it is, but it definitely sucked me in. I’ve never read any of A.C. Gaughen’s books before, but if she can build worlds like this, then clearly I’ve been missing out! If you are a reader who loves some good world-building, I would definitely recommend this.
Onto those reviews. A lot of the three stars reviews I’ve seen have are talking about how the cover suggests this book as being a light fantasy read when it is definitely not. And I totally agree—this book is dark and deals with some really serious topics. If you’re looking for something light-hearted, then this is not the book for you. But if you’re okay with dark themes, then this is definitely worth a read.
So all in all, this book blew me away. I think this series has the potential to become one of my all-time favourites. Now to wait for the second book to be announced.
